EPA Ruling Generates Controversy
Amid the ongoing debate about the environmental and health risks of nanotechnology, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that it will maintain its practice of categorizing nanomaterials as "new" or "existing" chemicals under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) on a case-by-case basis. Detractors suggest that different nanoforms of the same material pose different hazards and that the EPA should instead invoke the "new uses" clause.

BASF Resins Announces Price Increase in North America
BASF Resins, Wyandotte, MI, will increase prices an average of 5 percent, effective September 15, 2007, or as contracts allow. The price increase includes, but is not limited to, the JONCRYL®, Basonat, Luwipal ®, Laromer®, Laropal®, Lucirin®, Luhydran, Laroflex® , Luron® and Plastopal® product lines. The price adjustments pertain to North American markets only and are necessary due to escalating transportation, raw material and energy costs in the region. JONCRYL is the trade name for BASF’s portfolio of styrene acrylic, acrylic and high solids polymers used in the printing and packaging, coatings and functional coatings markets.

Price Increase for Witcobond Urethane Dispersions
Chemtura Corp. announced that prices for Witcobond® Urethane Dispersions will be increased by $0.10 per pound, effective September 10, 2007, or as contracts allow. The change is directly related to escalating raw materials costs

Pilot Chemical Increases Price of Surfactants
Pilot Chemical Co. has announced in-quarter-list and off-list price increase on surfactants, effective September 1, 2007, or as contracts allow. The following increases apply:
·         Aristonate® andAristol® oil soluble alkyl aryl sulfonates will increase by 1.5 – 3.0 c/lb.
·          Aristonic® acids will increase by 3.0 c/lb.
·         Calimulse® emulsion aids will increase by 0.5 - 1.5 c/lb.
·         Calsoft® sulfonates will increase by 0.5 - 1.5 c/lb.
·         Calsuds® detergent concentrates will increase by 1.0 c/lb.
