BASF Coatings Expands Biomass-Balanced Portfolio to North American Refinish Market

Following successful launches in Europe and Asia, the first products for the automotive refinish coatings market will now also be introduced in North America this year. These products contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and circular economy. Photo: BASF Coatings
BASF Coatings is expanding its portfolio of biomass-balanced coatings products into the North American automotive refinish market in 2025. The move follows earlier launches in Europe and Asia and reflects the company’s strategy to support sustainable transformation across the coatings industry.
BASF’s biomass-balanced products include the ReSource line for OEM coatings and functional films, and refinish solutions under the Glasurit® Eco Balance and R-M® eSense brands. These products are manufactured using a certified biomass balance approach that substitutes a portion of fossil feedstocks with renewable raw materials at the start of production. This method is certified by REDcert² and allows BASF to attribute the renewable content to individual products.
“With the upcoming expansion of our offering for North America, we are further strengthening our commitment to sustainability,” said Dr. Markus Piepenbrink, head of sustainability at BASF Coatings. Dennis Dropmann, sustainability manager and lead for mass balance, added that the company’s 250 biomass-balanced products helped avoid approximately 8 million kilograms of CO₂ emissions in 2024. BASF aims to increase that savings to 10 million kilograms in 2025.
BASF Coatings’ sustainability data—including product carbon footprints—follows ISO 14067:2018 and Together for Sustainability (TfS) guidelines. Product CO₂ footprints are calculated cradle to gate, excluding emissions from application or end-of-life stages.
