In a July 2025 report, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) concluded that the EPA does not consistently verify whether state-run lead-based paint programs remain at least as protective as the federal program. The audit found that the agency lacks a formal policy for reviewing authorized state programs and has not developed procedures for withdrawing program approval when necessary.
According to the report, these gaps could reduce the effectiveness of lead hazard protections and increase the risk of exposure, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children. The OIG issued four recommendations to improve oversight, including establishing a national oversight policy and tracking system. EPA officials generally agreed with the findings and proposed corrective actions.
