BARCELONA, Spain - Nubiola is celebrating its 100th anniversary of providing color solutions to the plastics, coatings, construction and cosmetics markets, as well as to a wide range of other global industries.

The company began in 1914 when it built a small factory in Barcelona, Spain, to produce laundry-grade ultramarine blues to make white cotton clothes look whiter. Now, 100 years later, the company is the world’s largest ultramarine producer and the only company with four plants dedicated to the production of this pigment. Nubiola is also a leading manufacturer of other specialty inorganic pigments with particular focus on the high-end grades of iron oxides, zinc ferrites, chrome oxide greens, chrome yellows and molybdate oranges, corrosion inhibitors, and bismuth vanadates.

As the world market became global, Nubiola, headquartered in Barcelona, has expanded globally also. In 1944, the company opened a factory in Llodio, Spain, which is now dedicated to the production of ultramarine blue, violet and pink pigments. In 1969, it set up a production plant in Colombia for specialty iron oxides and zinc ferrites, which now also produces ultramarine blues, chrome oxide greens, chrome yellows, molybdate oranges and corrosion inhibitors. In 1992, Nubiola acquired its plant in Romania, where the company manufactures its label-free corrosion inhibitors and a wide variety of ultramarine blues. Two years later, Nubiola acquired a plant in India for the production of ultramarine blues for the Asian market. Nubiola broke into the United States in 1999. In 2003, the company invested in its current North America headquarters in Norcross, GA, where it has offices, a technical center, a warehouse and specific manufacturing facilities to make pigment preparations. Since the early 2000s, Nubiola has been expanding its sales office network in Japan, China, the UK, and Germany.

In total, the company has five production plants and nine commercial sites in key strategic markets, which allow for a strong global presence while maintaining regional warehousing and customer service to over 85 countries.
