Pushed by legislation and pulled by customers, the trend in the coatings market is to shift away from solventborne and towards waterborne coatings. The consumer is expecting paints with virtually no odor. The 2010 EU directive on VOC requires coating systems with lower VOC levels. Paint formulators need optimized formulas that improve performance, save money and allow for lower VOC levels in their coatings. Today, different products are used in waterborne coatings to control the pH: ammonia, inorganic bases, amines. However most of these products are not effective enough to resolve the problems the formulator is currently facing.

It is important to remember that as paint manufacturers experiment with new additives, initial formulas can be significantly over-dispersed, over-coalesced, over-emulsified and “over-additized” in general. This often results from the assumption that next-generation additives are identical in off-diagonal benefits with the materials they replace – and this is often not the case.

Attendees will learn about off-diagonal additive benefits, why they are important, and how they can be optimized. In particular, we will cover optimized low- and zero-VOC formulas based on new types of amine neutralizing agents developed by Taminco.

• Advantex® is a neutralizing amine that not only controls the pH but also has virtually no odor and displays a synergistic effect with surfactants and coupling agents.


• Vantex®-T is a non-VOC neutralizing amine that acts partly as emulsifier and coalescent agent. This additive is an excellent corrosion inhibitor, and provides for outstanding adhesion and viscosity controlling properties.
