Xiom Corp., the manufacturer of an on-site plastic powder coating spray system, has purchased a 50% ownership in a new joint venture, New Bedford Coatings LLC of New Bedford, MA. The new venture will focus on applying Xiom’s plastic protective coatings on the more than 700 sea-going fishing trawlers in the New Bedford Harbor fishing fleet, a $2 billion dollar commercial enterprise. According to Xiom, the tough, heavy-duty coatings will provide the trawlers with superior protection against the elements while also reducing maintenance costs, which previously have totaled around $200 million annually.

In addition to protecting surfaces from the harmful effects of UV and salt water, Xiom has a line of specialized functional coatings with anti-foul properties. New Bedford Coatings plans to apply Xiom’s anti-foul coatings to the underside of hulls to minimize marine growth. Anti-corrosion coatings will be applied to trawler superstructures, and anti-microbial coatings will be used on the ships’ holding tanks. When applied to trawler decks, Xiom’s anti-skid coatings reportedly will help ensure crew safety.
