Akzo Nobel is a leading global company in healthcare products, coatings and chemicals. It is the largest coatings company in the world with about 8% share and is active in all sectors of the coatings industry. In the United States, Akzo does not have a position in architectural coatings, but is a major supplier of powder, coil and wood coatings in addition to having a position in other industrial, auto-refinish and marine coatings. North American coatings sales are estimated at $1.100 billion. Total Akzo Nobel worldwide sales were $16.4 billion in 2003 and total coatings business unit sales were $6.566 billion. Non-coatings sales of the business unit amounted to $492 million.

Notes: In 2003 Akzo opened a powder coating facility in Vietnam, and a non-stick coatings facility in Dongguan, China. It acquired full ownership in its powder coatings activities in South Korea, and set up a marketing and sales company for marine and protective coatings in Japan. In 2004 Akzo opened a non-stick coatings facility in Brazil.
