Many vehicle owners have experienced the varied ways that a vehicle’s coating system shows defects from outdoor exposure, resulting in an undesirable appearance. There are two particular types of defects – physical and mechanical – that cause the undesirable appearance. Physical defects include, but are not limited to, chipping, scratching, cracking, waterspot etching, gloss loss, color fade, peeling (delamination), erosion (film loss), whitening, biological damage (bugs, tree sap, pollen), and spotting from exposure to car maintenance chemicals such as brake fluid or transmission fluid (Figures 1-4).
