Emulsions for High-Performance Exterior Paints with Increased Efflorescence Resistance and Reduced Biocide Leach-Out

Exterior architectural paints can be formulated with various types of latex binders, depending on the target market segment. The requirements of these market segments are region-specific due to building techniques and substrates, air quality, and weather conditions. Especially in tropical and subtropical areas, high-quality emulsion-based exterior paints require high-performance binders of superior quality. Under this light, such paints are often associated with all-acrylic binders. These binders, however, do exhibit some limitations, especially in terms of water resistance. There is thus a clear market need for acrylic binders of outstanding quality, which can enable extended coating life of exterior architectural paints. This presentation describes the use of vinyl versatate monomer as a modifying comonomer in acrylic latices, which can be used to formulate paints with increased efflorescence resistance and reduced biocide leach-out. Paints formulated with such modified binders exhibit very good dirt pick-up resistance, moisture and UV resistance, reducing maintenance costs. In addition, because of the reduced leaching out of biocides, these paints are more environmentally-friendly.
