The global market for architectural paint continues to grow, and as more paint is produced the need for paint recycling grows, too. Many recycled paint manufacturers are conducting conventional paint recycling. But to compete in the growing market with ever-more sophisticated virgin paint products, the recycled paint industry must evolve. We must understand trends in consumer preferences, apply technological innovations to make products that meet those demands, invest in increased capacity to recycle paint, and raise awareness among consumers of the high-quality and environmental value of recycled paint so we can sell more of it. Failing to do so will hinder paint stewardship and the paint circular economy. For these reasons, GDB International has spent the past two years investing in research and development to create smarter paint formulations, better packaging, and greater production capacity. In GDB’s new multi-layer paint recycling process, recovered paint is sorted, filtered, and tested for quality multiple times at both the macro and micro levels, then masterfully tinted to achieve a high-quality product – all with zero water use. The process has also increased production capacity to 30,000 gallons per day. GDB now has three recycling facilities across the U.S. – in Naperville, IL; McCallan, TX; and New Brunswick, NJ – and two retail stores in Texas, with more to come, where GDB sells its recycled paint brand, Evolve. The company now employees over 240 people in the U.S. including processors, chemists, salespeople, and others. GDB International is also investing in small businesses globally, bringing its paint recycling know-how to entrepreneurs throughout Africa and in India, among other countries, building their capacity to create good-paying jobs while growing demand for architectural recycled paint. For the past 23 years, GDB International has been leading the industry and supporting the PaintCare program. In his presentation, Sanjeev Bagaria, founder and CEO of GDB’s paint division, will discuss how the recycled paint industry can position itself for growth in the next decade of product stewardship and move the entire paint industry into the circular economy.
