Ketones for a Tightening VOC Regulatory Environment
Many factors influence solvent selection in modern coating formulations. In addition to the standard property and cost considerations, VOC regulations strongly affect solvent choice. High solids coatings are expected to be applied and perform as conventional coatings. However, this feat must be achieved with considerably less solvent. Thus, solvent selection is critical in developing VOC-compliant coating systems.
Solvents should be chosen primarily on their efficiency for reducing the solution viscosity of the coating binder. Second, regulations express VOC content as weight of solvent per volume of coating. This calculation method favors low-density solvents. Ketones are the most effective solvent family for developing low-VOC coatings because of their viscosity reduction efficiency and low density.
