Andrew Recker is Technical Marketing Manager for Borchers division of Milliken. He has a BS, an MBA and is finishing a Master of Science in Polymer Engineering from North Carolina State University. Over the past 20 years he has been working in research and development for major coatings and chemical companies. Most of the development work has been focused on corrosion resistance, whether in the form of a coating or passivation treatment. He is currently involved in doing research on surface preparation prior to high-performance coating application and novel approaches to corrosion resistance enhancement.
Novel Inspection Technology for Proper Surface Preparation
Various surface treatment technologies exist in the the protective and industrial coatings markets to clean and passivate the metal surface. If applied correctly, there is very low risk of any negative impact on the applied coating’s performance. However, if the materials are applied incorrectly with regard to concentration or carelessness in pooling and collection in recessed areas, the performance of the applied coating will be compromised significantly due to loss of adhesion caused by excess surface treatment materials on the substrate surface. This presentation will illustrate a novel surface treatment technology that allows for the inspector to determine if there is any material on the surface of the metal prior to coating application. This inspection technology allows for a "Go/No-Go" decision to be made and remedy the situation to ensure the highest performance of the applied protective coating.
