CHARLOTTE, NC - Dr. James W. Rawlins has received the first-ever American Coatings Award for his collaborative paper entitled, “Letting Mother Nature Tackle the Dirty Work: The Future of Coatings Additives.” The award-winning paper was presented at the American Coatings Conference. Rawlins authored the paper along with co-authors Michael D. Blanton and Pirro B. Cipi as well as C. Steven McDaniel, Melinda E. Wales and Juan Carlo Carvajal. It was selected as the most outstanding from 72 finalists of over 170 submissions.

The award-winning paper explores how biological molecules such as enzymes and peptides have traditionally been viewed as functionally restricted to very narrow environmental conditions, but how increased levels of understanding have led to the development of innovative, bio-engineered “smart” additives for paint and coatings.

Rawlins co-authored an article with Wales and McDaniel, among others, in the July 2006 issue of PCI, titled “Next-Generation Antimicrobial Additives for Reactive Surface Coatings.” In February 2005, PCI published an article on Smart Coatings, titled “Biocatalytic Coatings,” which was written by McDaniel, Wales and other colleagues.
