YPSILANTI, MI - Taki Anagnostou, retired professor and program coordinator of the B.S. in Polymers and Coatings Technology and M.S. in Polymer Technology programs at Eastern Michigan University, died Feb. 17 at his home after suffering a heart attack. He was 72.

Dr. Anagnostou was credited with building the numbers of the university's polymers and coatings technology majors to significant levels during his 11-year tenure at the Ypsilanti, MI-based institution. Before joining the EMU faculty, he was director of Coatings Research at Akzo Nobel Coatings, and he previously held technical positions at Guardsman Coatings, Chrysler Corp. and Wyandott Chemical.

Dr. Anagnostou is survived by his wife, Donna, three children and six grandchildren.

Sidney B. Levinson; was President of DL Labs,
Noted Authority on Test Methods for Coatings

NEW YORK - Sidney B. Levinson, retired president of DL Labs and a noted authority on coatings test methods, died March 4. He was 92.

Mr. Levinson started his career in the coatings industry in 1936 after graduating from the City College of New York with a degree in chemical engineering. He joined DL Labs in 1948 and remained with the company for 35 years. He was well-known and widely respected in the industry, and was the first individual who did not work for a coatings-manufacturing company to be elected president of the New York Society for Coatings Technology. He was a member and chairman of numerous society committees, including the Technical Committee, and was the author of technical papers presented at annual meetings of the Federation of Societies For Coatings Technology annual meetings.

Mr Levinson received the FSCT's highest honor, the George B. Heckel award, in 1958, and was the recipient of virtually every award that the New York Society gives to its members, including the PaVaC Award, the society's highest honor, and the Roy B. Kienle award for technical contributions.

Mr. Levinson was a member of ASTM Committee D01 on Paints and Related Materials for many years, serving as its chairman for three terms. He was the lead researcher in the development of ASTM D 2486, a widely used test method to evaluate the scrub resistance of architectural coatings. He was elected an Honorary Member of ASTM. He was also an active member of the NPCA's Scientific Committee, serving as a technical liaison between industry and its suppliers.

Mr. Levinson was the author of more than 30 articles related to the paint and coatings industry, and was the primary researcher and author of the Tri-Services (U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force) Paint and Coatings Manual, which is regarded as the first successful effort to coordinate the painting practices of the three branches of service. He also lectured widely.

Mr. Levinson is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son and daughter; and several grandchildren.
