Powder coatings are dry finishes electrostatically applied to objects, subsequently heated to melt and fuse into hard, protective layers. This eco-friendly technology produces durable, chemical, and impact-resistant finishes with a wide range of colors and textures, making it a popular choice for industries from automotive to outdoor furniture.
Conceptually, powder coatings are easy to produce, with a handful of raw materials being used in a formulation. Since there are no solvents involved in the processing of powder coatings, there is little room for correction/adjustment of formulation/processing mishaps.
Inadequate processing of powder coatings may lead to various defects, the most obvious being related to appearance (gloss, orange peel, pinholes, and fish-eyes). Oftentimes, costly and unnecessary formulation adjustments are conducted to compensate for these undesired results. Costly reprocessing is also a frequent route to improve the performance of an off-spec batch of powder.
This session will address the most important steps in the production of a powder coating, namely pre-mixing and extrusion and will show how to adjust processing parameters to ensure “first-time-right”.
Time permitting, we will also discuss some formulation tips for enhanced performance.
What you will learn:
- Basics on powder coating formulation
- Review of the steps involved in powder coating production
- Why is processing so much more important for powders than for liquids?
- Common procedures and their consequences
- How to improve processing (and, no, better processing is not slower processing)
- Bonus [time allowing]: tips and tricks on formulating powder coatings
