BASF Starts Up New Production Plant in France to Support Polyamide Growth

BASF announced the startup of its new world-scale hexamethylenediamine (HMD) production plant in Chalampé, France, increasing its annual HMD capacity to 260,000 metric tons. Construction began in 2022.
“This investment underlines BASF’s strong commitment to chemical production in Europe and our determination to support regional growth,” said Dr. Stephan Kothrade, member of the Board of Executive Directors. “It is yet another example of how we put our ‘Winning Ways’ strategy into action to create long-term value and secure future competitiveness.”
The new facility supports BASF’s growth strategy in the polyamide 6.6 (PA 6.6) market. In addition to the Chalampé plant, BASF is completing an expansion of its PA 6.6 polymerization capacity in Freiburg, Germany.
“The successful completion of this investment is a significant step toward our goal of being the leading supplier for HMD and the preferred partner for PA 6.6 in Europe,” said Dr. Ramkumar Dhruva, president of BASF’s Monomers division.
The Chalampé site is integrated with adiponitrile (ADN) feedstock and hosts research and infrastructure dedicated to PA 6.6 development. HMD is a critical intermediate in the production of PA 6.6 polymers and coatings raw materials used in automotive and fiber applications.
