Improve Performance and Mechanical Properties of Waterborne Elastomeric Coatings with Microfibrillated Cellulose

Water-based acrylic roof coatings are traditionally thickened with cellulosics (HEC) and associative thickeners (HEUR, HASE). The use of these thickeners can often lead to challenges with both water resistance and absorption of the coating. In addition, the control of syneresis and sagging is often challenging.

Exilva microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), a bio-based, sustainable and multifunctional product made of cellulose, is a new alternative to the traditional thickeners. It consists of fibrils with lateral dimensions in the nanoscale and lengths up to micron scale. These strong fibrils provide mechanical properties for the final coating. Exilva’s unique rheological properties allow for increased stability as well as an easier application of the paint. The high yield stress of Exilva prevents settling of heavy particles as well as floating of hollow microspheres, whereas the strong shear thinning allows the spraying of thick formulations. The superior mud crack resistance allows applying thick layers without any fear of cracking.

Benefits you can expect with Exilva are:
    • Higher wet film thickness without fear of mud cracking
    • Better stability without impact on the KU and ICI
    • Improved mechanical properties
    • Better adhesion on concrete
