Specialty chemicals group ALTANA is taking a major step towards sustainability with its new climate strategy. The company has set a goal to achieve net zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. This includes a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in Scopes 1, 2 and 3. ALTANA also plans to remove any remaining emissions from the atmosphere.

To reach its goal, ALTANA is focusing on reducing emissions within its direct control. The company aims to cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% by 2040. ALTANA has already made significant progress in this area, reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 70% between 2014 and 2023.

ALTANA’s climate targets have been confirmed by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company is also aligning its strategy with the Paris Climate Agreement.

In addition to its emissions reduction efforts, ALTANA is also prioritizing the use of sustainable raw materials and the electrification of its processes and vehicles. The company is also working to reduce its transport routes and increase its use of renewable energy.

ALTANA’s ECKART division is already a leader in the use of sustainable raw materials. The division sources nearly all of its aluminum from production processes powered by renewable energy. ECKART also incorporates recycled aluminum into its products.

The company’s CEO, Martin Babilas, emphasized the importance of innovation in achieving ALTANA’s climate goals. Babilas also called on policymakers to support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

“Industry plays a key role in achieving climate protection targets by driving innovation,” said Babilas. “The European Green Deal makes high demands but also offers great opportunities. Politicians must create the framework for this, for example by providing access to sufficient energy from renewable sources at competitive prices.”

ALTANA’s climate strategy is part of the company’s broader commitment to sustainability. The company is also focused on making its products more sustainable and supporting its customers in their own sustainability efforts.
