Innovative Coatings Corp., Atlanta, announced the development of a wood-preservative coating that the company says offers an alternative to chromated copper arsenate (CCA) preservatives currently used to treat billions of board feet of lumber annually. Wayne Bean, Innovative Coatings senior chemist and vice president, said the no-VOC, polymer-based coating encapsulates the wood with a tough, non-toxic shield that prevents water and insect penetration. He said the coating also can be applied to lumber previously treated with CCA to prevent leaching of arsenic compounds.
