BASF Corp.'s Industrial Coatings Regional Business Unit, Southfield, MI, has introduced coatings products for metal substrates that the company says dramatically increase the reflectivity of medium to dark colors, reducing heat levels on surfaces such as metal roofing. The products, carrying the brand name ULTRA-Cool(tm), expand on existing heat-reducing coatings technologies that were confined only to white and other light colors, the company says. BASF says its data indicate that certain standard ULTRA-Cool colors can demonstrate a 38.3% reflectivity, while identical colors in conventional coatings can achieve a 25.2% reflectivity level. The company says each additional percentage point of reflectivity reduces metal temperatures by one degree.
