New Coatings Demonstrate Company’s Leading Active Environmental Stewardship

An industrial manufacturing facility was looking for high wear resistance. The first photo shows the floor before the coatings were applied.

Tennant Company, a leading manufacturer of surface maintenance equipment and coatings, introduced new performance-leading industrial maintenance coatings that not only meet the strict new VOC requirements of California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), but are even lower than existing standards in many states throughout the country.

Since September 1999, the U.S. EPA has limited the emissions of VOCs from industrial maintenance coatings to 450 g/L. However, several states and counties have more stringent VOC limits than the federal limits, restricting emissions to as low as 250 g/L. And on July 1, California’s SCAQMD, which includes 162 cities and roughly 16 million people in southern California, changed its VOC limit to just 100 g/L for industrial maintenance coatings.

“Tennant Company is dedicated to supporting and improving the environment, and for that reason we have for years offered coatings products with reduced solvent emissions below 450 g/L, 250 g/L and even 100 g/L that exceed the strictest of VOC limitations,” said Mike Rylander, product manager with Tennant Company. “These new Tennant coatings, however, offer not only reduced solvents at the 100 g/L level but superior, unprecedented chemical and wear resistance and light stability. They are ideal for aviation and manufacturing facilities that wish to limit VOC emissions and achieve a higher level of performance.”

The second photo shows the floor after application of Tennant Eco-CEP primer and Eco-HTS 100 topcoat for high-traffic wear.

Tennant’s new 100 g/L VOC-compliant coatings include Eco-CEP™, Eco-HPS® 100 and Eco-HTS™ 100. The Eco-CEP color epoxy primer is a white epoxy primer designed to hide under white and light-gray topcoats that far exceeds the new 100 g/L VOC limitations with a VOC emission of just 9 g/L. Eco-CEP requires just one or two coats, yet offers significantly greater hide than standard epoxy with field add colorant, which often requires more coats or mils as well as numerous topcoat applications. For this reason, use of this primer saves money and reduces labor costs.

The gloss urethane topcoat (Eco HPS) and satin urethane topcoat (Eco HTS) have been among the company’s most popular urethanes. These products and their associated colorants were redesigned and re-introduced with lower VOC levels as Eco-HPS 100 and Eco-HTS 100. The new colorants include White 100, Black 100, Canada Gray 100 and Light Gray 100. The new topcoats offer the same outstanding properties as the original products, including higher light reflectivity, and chemical and wear resistance.

All of Tennant's Eco-Advantage® coatings are known for being environmentally friendly, meaning they:

  • require less solvent, which reduces evaporation and contamination;
  • are virtually odor-free, which assists with indoor air quality; and
  • contain a maximum VOC level of 250 g/L, which supports architects and designers in gaining one Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credit (the three new products exceed this standard).
With their numerous product attributes, Tennant Company’s new 100 g/L VOC-compliant coatings are appropriate for use nationwide in any facility that wants to achieve unprecedented results and take a leadership role in reducing VOC emissions.
