CLEVELAND - The National Coil Coating Association (NCCA) has published a position paper discussing the appropriateness of ASTM B 449 in preparing a standard specification for non-chromates on aluminum. The paper is part of the NCCA's collection of tool kits created to provide technical information on issues important in the coil coating industry.
Many professionals have become accustomed to using the ASTM B 449-93 (R2004) Standard Specification for Chromates on Aluminum to specify coating weights for prepainted aluminum; however, new treatments that do not use chromates are becoming more widespread. The B 449 standard is not applicable to these new coatings. The paper discusses how specifying coating weights for new, non-chromate coatings requires a different approach.
