The new BC40 TRU TEMP® finishing system from Birchwood Casey uses a seven tank process line and a patented two-step chemistry to produce a magnetite finish of .000020" thickness that is satin black in appearance and equal to that of conventional hot black oxide. The process reportedly produces high-quality black finishes on iron and steel components in just 25 minutes. The system operates at just 200F instead of the 290F required for hot oxides, thereby avoiding the severe splattering and boil-over hazards associated with the latter. Additionally, the process contains no chemicals regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and does not require waste treatment equipment. In most sewer districts, the rinse waters are considered to be sewerable as non-hazardous effluent. As a result, the company reports that the initial capital investment can be substantially lower than other blackening process systems.
