CHARLOTTE, NC - According to an article in the Charlotte Observer, an employee suffered chemical burns Tuesday evening at an Emerald Performance Materials facility in Charlotte, NC, the result of a chemical spill at the facility. Fire crews were called in around 9 p.m. to deal with an acid spill inside the plant, which produces additives and processing aids for rubber, food and coatings, among other things.

A hazmat team from the Charlotte Fire Department was called in to control the leak, which, according to broadcast reports, was caused by a leaking pipe. According to authorities, the chemical involved in the spill was trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, or triflic acid.
