What Painters Should Consider to Earn and Maintain Customer Trust

By Jim Loughlin

One of the most challenging aspects when it comes to starting and running a business is how to earn customers’ trust and keep it. Any company, regardless of size or industry, needs a loyal customer base in order to grow. But with stiff competition and the ever-changing customer landscape, it's challenging to stand out and convince potential customers to try a product or service. What makes you different from the competitors? How can you help your customers? Can you deliver what you promised?

In the painting industry, with so many options available, how can you encourage your customers to buy your services? Earning and maintaining the trust of customers may be challenging and time-consuming, but don't worry, there are several ways to make it easier to earn their trust and make them loyal to the brand. Here are some things that painters should consider:

  • Transparency and honesty are crucial. In the painting business or any business for that matter, it pays to be honest and transparent. Customers deserve to know more about the people who will be coming into their home. Establish transparency and honesty by providing documents about the profiles of your staff and company rules and regulations. For example, you can show your customers proof of background checks on your staff to make them feel safe about letting strangers into their home. Another option is to try getting feedback from previous customers. Making changes based on their suggestions is a great way to enhance the customer experience. It will prove you value their opinion and they’ll be more likely to come back to your business again.
  • Provide satisfaction guarantees or warranties. There is always a possibility that the customer might not be satisfied with the job you’ve done. What will you do in case this happens? Make sure to give customers written satisfactions guarantees and warranties. Include it on your website, sales materials, and other marketing collaterals.
  • This is an obvious one, but be helpful and professional. One of the key things that your customers will be concerned about is choosing the best paint color or design to suit their home or office. They might be afraid of choosing a color that they ultimately won’t like. This is an ideal opportunity to show off your expertise and know-how. Offer advice on how to select color combinations. You can use user-friendly tools to give customers an idea on what the property will look like with a particular color scheme. Tools like ColorSnap from Sherwin-Williams or Room Visualizer from Glidden are just a couple of examples. Encourage them to ask questions and make sure to answer them correctly.
  • Carry adequate insurance for painters. Any business with coverage demonstrates readiness, reliability and trustworthiness. It tells customers that the company sees safety and protection as a priority, and they’re in good hands when doing business with you. This really helps in convincing your target market that you can be trusted.

As with any industry, running a painting business comes with potential risks. Accidents can happen to anyone at any time. You need protection against significant financial losses or any damage to your reputation caused by claims. Insurance will be able to help you protect both. It also gives you peace of mind, knowing that you have something to depend in case of an accident.

There are different insurance providers out there, offering a wide selection of coverage. The selection process may be daunting, but the key is to know the potential risks in the business to determine which types of insurance to buy. For painters, here are the key policies to consider:

General Liability insurance: This type of coverage protects painting business owners and contractors against financial losses due to claims that are associated with personal injuries or property damage from day-to-day operations. If there are medical expenses and legal fees involved, the general liability insurance will take care of these.

Commercial Auto insurance: As a painter, you know you have a lot of equipment to tow around, and as the name suggests, this policy will cover the cost of repairs should one of your company vehicles ever be involved in an accident.

Worker's Compensation insurance: Employees are a crucial part of a painting business, so they also need to be protected. And that's what this type of coverage is designed to do. If an employee slips or falls from a ladder while painting, the insurance will take care of the medical costs and rehabilitation expenses. If that employee needs some recovery time, the worker's compensation insurance can cover the salaries lost too.

Running your own painting operation is stressful enough, without the added weight of worrying about all the risks involved. Having adequate insurance coverage is a quick and easy way to put your mind at ease, leaving you free to focus on what matters most- growing your business through customer trust and loyalty.
