ASTM Committee on Weathering and Durability Honors Norma D. Searle
W. CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — ASTM International Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability has presented the Warren D. Ketola Award to consultant Norma D. Searle of Deerfield Beach, FL.
The committee specifically noted Searle’s contributions to the development of standards to help the industry better understand weathering effects. She has been a member of ASTM and G03 since 1984. Searle works on standards containing weathering tests in other ASTM committees in addition to G03, including C24 on Building Seals and Sealants; D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications; D04 on Road and Paving Materials; D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing; D10 on Packaging; D11 on Rubber; and D20 on Plastics. She was honored with the C24 Lou Toporcer Hall of Fame Award in 2002 and has also received several Awards of Appreciation.
Searle is a consultant in photochemistry and weathering of polymeric and other non-metallic materials. Prior to starting her consultancy work in 1983, she was a Senior Research Chemist and a group leader of the Physical Chemistry and Analytical Groups at American Cyanamid Co. in Bound Brook, NJ. She has written four book chapters and more than 35 technical publications.
A graduate of Hunter College of The City University of New York, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Searle received her Ph.D. in physical chemistry from New York University. Outside ASTM, she is a member of the American Chemical Society, CIE Division 6 on Photochemistry and Photobiology (part of the International Commission on Illumination) and the South Florida Computer Association.
