New York’s historic Hudson Yards development – which is changing the city’s iconic skyline – has reached its latest milestone, and AkzoNobel has made a major contribution.

The largest private real estate development in U.S. history, the ongoing project recently saw the completion of the two towers at 10 and 30 Hudson Yards. Taller than the Empire State Building, the impressive glass and steel structure of 30 Hudson Yards uses the company’s high-performance architectural powder coatings, while 10 Hudson Yards features AkzoNobel’s industrial coatings.

Described as a template for the future of cities, the new Manhattan neighborhood represents one of the most complex construction projects New York has ever seen – with the company also supplying products for several other new buildings in various stages of completion.

“We’re extremely proud to be part of this unprecedented investment in the heart of one of the world’s greatest cities,” says Simon Parker, Managing Director of AkzoNobel Industrial Coatings, which provided liquid coatings for the towers. “It underlines the trust that customers have in our ability to deliver coatings technology that can provide modern buildings with extreme levels of durability and sustainability.”

Most of the aluminum on the LEED1 Gold-designed larger tower is coated with the company’s Interpon D3000 Fluromax metallic powder coating, including the highly prominent first five stories. The remaining louvers and some of the ornamental metal were coated with AkzoNobel’s TRINAR liquid coating. The shorter tower at 10 Hudson Yards features AkzoNobel’s TRINAR coatings on all visible aluminum – both exterior and interior.

A stand-out feature of 30 Hudson Yards is an outdoor observation deck, which is the highest in the western hemisphere. Expected to open to the public in 2020, it is 335 meters (1,100 feet) in the air and extends 20 meters (65 feet) from the building.

“We have a long track record of supplying market-leading products for iconic buildings all over the world and are very excited to be involved in the Hudson Yards development,” adds Daniela Vlad, Managing Director of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business. “Customers value our unique ability to supply top quality liquid and powder coatings and meet any specification, no matter how demanding.”

Planned as the first LEED-certified neighborhood, Hudson Yards is the latest example of how the paints and coatings systems we supply are making an important contribution to the ongoing development of more sustainable cities. Hudson Yards will eventually encompass more than 20 buildings, including residential and office space, retail outlets, restaurants and a luxury hotel.

AkzoNobel products can already be found not too far away on Brooklyn Bridge, the Barclays Center and the New York Times building. Elsewhere in the U.S., the company’s coatings have been used on Ocean City in New Jersey; Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago; the SheiKra rollercoaster in Tampa, Florida; Nationals Park in Washington DC; and Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

N-Butylpyrrolidone (NBP) as a Green Solvent to Replace N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in Industrial Coating Applications

ON DEMAND: EPA published a regulation proposal around N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in June 2024 to ban or limit NMP in many applications, such as paints and coatings and their removers. N-butylpyrrolidone (NBP) is a powerful and versatile solvent for a variety of industries looking for alternatives to substance of very high concern (SVHC)-listed solvents.
