MAINZ, Germany — Market research and consulting firm CHEM Research GmbH released results from its most recent analysis of coatings consumption in Germany. According to the firm, the German market for coatings and paint recorded a 4.5% drop in sales in the first quarter of 2021. Decorative paints decreased by 6 % in volume terms, while industrial coatings lost 2.5 %.

Decorative paints (including plasters and putties) suffered losses in the DIY segment due to the retail outlet lockdown, while the professional/trade segment experienced slight growth. In the industrial coatings sector, the largest volume segment, General Industry, which includes house appliances, machinery and general metal finishing, showed signs of recovery. Modest growth in industrial wood finishing was offset by weak furniture production, leading to a decline in the wood/furniture coatings segment. The company reports that the automotive OEM, vehicle refinishing, and protective and marine applications showed the largest volume drops.
