Nature-inspired colors are an ongoing trend in home design this year. With their calming appeal and timeless aesthetic, it’s no wonder the most popular colors of 2023 are warm and earthy. Terracotta was selected as the most popular shade of 2023 by 50% of experts. This vibrant hue can inject a burst of color amidst a backdrop of soothing neutrals.

Clay and creamy white are also within the top three trending shades this year, offering homeowners the opportunity to incorporate classic neutrals that seamlessly blend into any living space. These color choices create a harmonious connection with the natural world, bringing a sense of warmth and sophistication to people’s interiors.

Homeowners are Opting for Bolder Shades

According to 58% of experts, the most popular color palette of 2023 offers a blend of neutrals infused with vibrant pops of bold hues. This signals a shift in homeowners' color choices for their interiors, as they embrace the opportunity to make a statement and showcase their personalities throughout their spaces.

Among the saturated shades capturing attention this year, deep pewter green and indigo reign as the top favorites to splash around the home. For those seeking a warmer ambiance, ochre and earthy orange also emerged as popular options, giving off a cozy and inviting atmosphere for living spaces.

“2023 is ready for deep, saturated colors that are balanced with neutrals. We will be using colors that empower this next season,” said Jackie Santos, Scottsdale Interior Design Group.

Entire Rooms and Ceilings

When asking about the methods of incorporating these colors into homes, it was revealed that 57% of experts suggested painting the entire room to introduce new shades this year. Painting the entire space has the biggest impact, so it’s recommended to start with neutrals when delving into the world of color for interiors.

When it comes to going bold, painting the ceiling instead of an accent wall is set to be popular according to experts this year. The ceiling isn’t a new way of incorporating color into a space, but it gives a cozy and unique feel without compromising on a statement. Despite making the painting project more difficult and costly, painting the ceiling can give the chosen color center-stage without overwhelming the room.

“The ceiling is seldom treated as an accent wall. As interior design creativity continues to be stretched and challenged I think the ceiling will become the element that takes a space from great to spectacular,” said Christopher Charles Evans, IndigoRED, LLC dba ChristopherCharles Interiors.

Safe Palettes for Selling in 2023

In terms of selling a home, warm neutrals and whites are still the most recommended shades for interiors. These shades tend to be universally appealing so are more likely to attract potential buyers.

When asked about home exteriors, white was recommended by the majority of experts as it gives off a sense of cleanliness, freshness, and timeless elegance, making a powerful and positive first impression and enhancing curb appeal. These colors tend to resonate with a wider range of people, so they’re a safe bet when looking to spruce up the home before selling.
