Covestro announced it is developing a waterborne and waterborne-UV family of high-performing resins for industrial coating applications such as wood furniture, cabinetry, and building products. Covestro’s waterborne resins are fueling a real time transformation in the industrial coatings industry. With growing regulatory and public pressure for water-based solutions, manufacturers in the wood and building products industry now have new performance targets for raw material suppliers.

Covestro solutions meet these targets and move users beyond basic specifications to the next generation of must have performance attributes, including:

  • A more circular, water-based solution without substances of high concern.
  • Three times less volatile organic compounds with performance characteristics that match solvent-based resins.
  • Energy savings with at least 50% less oven time to remove the water, and reduced carbon footprint from manufacturing efficiencies.

“Coaters are seeking improvements in factory efficiency and need to expand production with less rework and damage due to current coating systems with slow water releasing properties”, said Mike Jeffries, Business Development Manager, Industrial Coatings at Covestro. “One of our water-based solutions offers up to a 50-60% improvement in line speed while maintaining other key performance properties of the end use product.”

The high-performing waterborne resins deliver fast drying efficiency with excellent stability and improved chemical and block resistance. Increased resin stability can reduce waste for manufacturers, while gains in throughput can facilitate production expansion without the need for major capital expenditures. The versatility of the resin also means it is capable of adhesion to multiple substrates.

“Differentiated solutions built on principles of sustainability that meet our customers and their customers’ needs are a core tenet at Covestro,” says Aaron Lockhart, sector head Industrial Coatings, North America at Covestro.  “Covestro is actively driving the industrial coatings market towards circularity and sustainability, aiming for profitable growth that benefits the entire industry.”
