New Lens Coating Tackles Global Regulations

PPG announced the launch of its Hi-Gard Non-Methanol hard coating for 1.5 standard index ophthalmic lenses. The formulation replaces traditional methanol-based coatings while maintaining scratch-resistant durability.
The updated product eliminates methanol, a restricted substance under REACH in the EU and subject to OSHA limits in the U.S. Removing methanol exposure helps customers comply with tightening workplace safety regulations while reducing the need for additional protective equipment.
“As regulatory bodies continue to tighten restrictions on materials like methanol, we are helping customers stay ahead of evolving legislation,” said Flora Wu, PPG senior group leader, optical monomers and coatings, Specialty Products. “PPG Hi-Gard Non-Methanol coating enhances lens durability while supporting worker safety.”
The coating is compatible with existing hard coating and replenishment systems, enabling minimal process disruption. PPG also introduced a non-methanol replenishment solvent to maintain viscosity and process control. Additional non-methanol formulations for other refractive indexes are planned.
