New Findings Reframe Corrosion as a Value Driver

AkzoNobel’s Interpon Powder Coatings brand announced findings from its new Cost of Corrosion report, a global study that identifies a significant financial opportunity for manufacturers. The independent research surveyed 1,000 manufacturing leaders across key regions and industries to understand how companies manage corrosion prevention amid rising cost pressures and evolving regulatory expectations.

Nearly a third of respondents cite lost customers and product returns as the most significant expense, while 28 percent emphasize environmental costs associated with waste and landfill.
The study highlights different drivers by sector. More than half of electric vehicle manufacturers already use advanced powder coatings to boost durability and sustainability. Architectural manufacturers face legacy systems that must adapt to tougher regulations, while industrial equipment producers are under pressure to modernize despite investment concerns. Regionally, North America and South Asia show readiness to adopt new technologies, while regulatory shifts in Europe are accelerating innovation.
“Corrosion protection was once seen mainly as a way to prevent product failures and financial loss,” said Jorrit van Rijn, marketing director at AkzoNobel Powder Coatings. “Today, it plays a far bigger role, helping manufacturers cut waste, improve efficiency, and deliver longer-lasting, higher quality products that customers trust and value.”
The report shows how powder coatings can extend product life, reduce energy use, and help manufacturers achieve sustainability goals while improving performance and profitability.
