AGC Reaches Recycled-Fluorine Milestone for AFLAS FFKM

AGC has completed third-party verification under UL 2809 for the fluorine raw materials used in its AFLAS™ FFKM fluoroelastomer.
The verification, completed in May 2026, confirmed that 100% of the fluorine content allocated to AFLAS FFKM is attributed to recycled fluorite through a mass balance approach. AGC refers to the recycled feedstock as Recycled Circular Fluorite.
Under a mass balance system, recycled and conventionally sourced raw materials may be combined during manufacturing. The recycled attributes are then allocated to a portion of the finished output in proportion to the amount of recycled material used.
Fluorine accounts for approximately 73% by weight of AFLAS FFKM polymer grades, according to AGC. The company manages the raw-material credits so that the full fluorine component allocated to the verified product is attributed to recycled material. The remainder of the polymer consists primarily of carbon.
UL 2809 provides a framework for validating environmental claims related to recycled-material content. The review included verification of AGC’s use of recycled fluorite and its management of raw-material credits.
AFLAS FFKM is designed to provide chemical, heat and plasma resistance in demanding environments. The material is used in sealing components and O-rings, particularly in semiconductor manufacturing applications requiring durability under harsh processing conditions.
AGC said the verification supports its broader effort to develop a circular economy for fluorine resources under its AGC plus-2026 management plan. The company describes the verified allocation as an industry-leading level of recycled-material utilization among fluoroelastomer materials, based on its research as of May 2026.
