BYK Additive Targets Extreme-pH Dispersion Challenges

BYK has introduced DISPERBYK-2180, a wetting and dispersing additive for inorganic pigments and fillers in aqueous coating and ink formulations.
The polycarboxylate-ether-based additive is designed to remain stable across a broad pH range, including the extreme alkaline conditions found in dispersion silicate paints and other mineral coating systems.
According to BYK, the product’s molecular structure contains a high concentration of ionic adhesive groups that help deflocculate and stabilize titanium dioxide, transparent iron oxides, fillers and other inorganic particles.
The additive is also designed to reduce mill-base viscosity. BYK said this can allow formulators to increase pigment loading while maintaining processability, fine particle sizes and uniform particle distribution. The company said these properties can positively affect color development and transparency.
DISPERBYK-2180 is suited to biocide- and VOC-free architectural coatings, including silicate paints. Other potential applications include wood and furniture coatings, industrial coatings, automotive OEM and refinish systems, marine and corrosion-protection coatings, printing inks and inkjet inks.
