Comments Due Aug. 1 on EU UV-Lamp Exemptions

RadTech – The Association for UV+EB Technology is encouraging stakeholders to submit comments by Aug. 1 supporting extensions of two exemptions under the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive. The current 4(a)-I and 4(f)-IV exemptions for mercury-vapor UV lamps expire Feb. 24, 2027.
Exemption 4(a)-I covers up to 15 mg of mercury in low-pressure, non-phosphor-coated discharge lamps when an application requires ultraviolet wavelengths as the primary spectral output. RadTech said this includes lamps used in photopolymer printing-plate exposure systems and tunnel dryers.
Exemption 4(f)-IV covers lamps emitting light in the ultraviolet spectrum. According to RadTech, it includes medium-pressure UV lamps used to set inks, coatings, paints, adhesives and extrusions.
Stakeholders may respond through the separate consultation questionnaires for 4(a)-I and 4(f)-IV. RadTech has prepared response templates but said companies must add their own relevant information. The 4(f)-IV review covers lamps RadTech identifies as being used with coatings, inks and adhesives, connecting the consultation to PCI’s coverage of UV-curing technology and regulatory developments.
