Brenntag reported strong second-quarter growth in its Material Science business, which serves coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers and other specialty-material markets.
The company reported second-quarter sales of €4.263 billion, up 10.2% from €3.869 billion a year earlier, or 11.1% on a constant-currency basis. Operating EBITDA increased 38.8% to €463 million, or 40.9% at constant currency. Brenntag said higher chemical pricing contributed to the earnings improvement while volumes remained comparatively stable.
Within Brenntag Specialties, Material Science generated operating gross profit of €105 million, an increase of 24.1% as reported and 24.6% at constant currency. Segment operating EBITDA rose 69.6% to €51 million, or 70.9% on a constant-currency basis.
Brenntag’s Material Science activities include the CASE — coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers — markets, along with construction, polymers and rubber. The company’s second-quarter analyst presentation said higher construction activity and oil-indexed products supported Material Science performance, while gross margins remained strong.
Across Brenntag Specialties, operating gross profit increased 8.4% to €310 million and operating EBITDA rose 17.6% to €130 million. Brenntag said Material Science and Beauty & Personal Care were particularly strong during the quarter.
The results also follow Brenntag’s second increase to its 2026 earnings outlook. On Aug. 7, the company raised its expected full-year operating EBITDA range to €1.35 billion-€1.45 billion from €1.25 billion-€1.40 billion. Brenntag had previously increased the range in June from an initial €1.15 billion-€1.35 billion. The company said its latest outlook reflects year-to-date performance and a positive start to the third quarter while acknowledging continued macroeconomic uncertainty and the risk of weaker demand.
