The Sherwin-Williams Co. has received a $1,206,408 Department of Defense award for research involving a flexible chromium-free primer coating for aircraft.

The Aug. 27 federal award notice was issued through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Humphreys Engineer Center Support Activity. The notice lists solicitation number W912HQ26CA055 and identifies Cleveland as the place of performance.

The award is connected with the Department of Defense’s Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program, which funds research intended to improve environmental performance and address risks associated with military operations, systems and installations. The underlying broad agency announcement sought research in areas including weapons systems and platforms.

The publicly available award information does not identify the proposed primer’s resin system, corrosion-inhibiting technology, application method, target substrates or qualification requirements. It also does not disclose the project’s period of performance or state whether the work is intended for original equipment, maintenance or repair applications.

Sherwin-Williams already markets several chromium-free aerospace primer technologies. Its current portfolio includes a chrome-hazard-free urethane primer qualified as part of an SAE AMS 3095 system and next-generation chrome-free epoxy primers intended for commercial, military and general aviation applications.

The federal notice does not establish whether the newly funded research is connected with those existing products or represents a separate technology platform.

Award source: SAM.gov award information as mirrored from the federal procurement record.

Sherwin-Williams had not issued a company press release about the award as of publication. The award amount, title, agency, solicitation number and place of performance come from a procurement-data service that mirrors and links to the underlying SAM.gov notice. The government record appears to contain the typographical error “coasting”; PCI has rendered the intended term as “coating.”

The award is relevant to PCI readers following industrial coatings, aerospace corrosion protection and the development of alternatives to chromium-containing primer systems.
