Hindalco Industries Ltd. has commissioned a greenfield superfine precipitated aluminum trihydrate manufacturing plant in Belagavi, Karnataka, India, adding 30,000 tonnes of annual capacity for the specialty material.
The company said the facility is the first domestic manufacturing operation for superfine precipitated ATH in India. The material is a halogen-free flame retardant used in paints as well as halogen-free flame-retardant cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation and composites.
Hindalco said the plant’s first-phase capacity can be expanded to 60,000 tonnes annually as demand develops. The company developed the process and R&D internally and equipped the facility with automated controls for critical processes.
The plant operates at Hindalco’s Belagavi refinery. According to the company, production is powered by renewable energy from biomass, solar and wind sources.
Hindalco said the investment expands its specialty alumina portfolio while reducing India’s reliance on imported material for fire-safety applications.
The additional ATH capacity expands supply of a specialty additive used to provide flame-retardant performance in paints and other formulated materials. See PCI’s Paint and Coatings Additives coverage.
