Sweden Publishes National PFAS Action Plan

The Swedish government has adopted a national action plan aimed at reducing the spread of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, and coordinating the country’s work on the chemicals.
As part of the plan, the government pointed to its proposed national prohibition on PFAS in selected consumer products. A proposal released in July covers clothing, footwear, impregnating agents for clothing and footwear, cosmetics, cookware and ski wax and proposed a Jan. 1, 2028, effective date.
The Sept. 8 action plan does not itself put that prohibition into effect. The proposed product restrictions remain subject to consultation, and Sweden has said national rules would be replaced when equivalent EU restrictions apply.
The inclusion of impregnating agents makes the proposal relevant to suppliers tracking potential PFAS restrictions affecting surface treatments and specialty formulations.
