PCI Names Axalta CTO Dr. Robert K. Roop 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

Paint & Coatings Industry has named Dr. Robert K. Roop, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Axalta Coating Systems, the recipient of the 2026 PCI Lifetime Achievement Award.
The annual award recognizes an individual whose sustained contributions have advanced coatings technology and strengthened the industry over the course of a career. PCI staff and members of its Editorial Advisory Board selected Roop for the breadth and lasting impact of his career, including technical innovation, global leadership, business impact and his commitment to developing the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Roop began his career with DuPont in 1989 and held a series of increasingly senior roles in research, manufacturing, plant management, and technology leadership before continuing his career with Axalta in 2013. Since becoming Axalta’s chief technology officer in 2019, he has led the company’s global technology organization supporting its Mobility, Refinish and Industrial businesses.
Throughout his career, Roop has championed the development and commercialization of technology solutions that improve sustainability, productivity, vehicle customization, battery safety and manufacturing efficiency. Technologies developed under his leadership have received 39 external honors since 2019, including seven R&D 100 recognitions, nine BIG Innovation Awards and 14 Edison Awards.
Roop has also worked to strengthen Axalta’s long-term technical capabilities. He championed the creation of an innovation incubator designed to identify and advance breakthrough opportunities, as well as the Fellows Forum, which promotes technical excellence, knowledge-sharing and professional development across the organization.

Roop holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University and is a Professional Engineer. He has also earned Six Sigma Green Belt and Innovation Process Champion credentials and completed the Innovation for Growth: Strategies & Best Practices program through Wharton Executive Education. He serves on the Innovation Research Interchange Board of Advisors.
