Sun Chemical, Archipelago Pair Barrier Coatings With Non-Contact Application System

Sun Chemical and Archipelago Technology Group have formed a partnership combining liquid barrier coatings with Archipelago’s Powerdrop non-contact coating platform for fiber-based packaging.
The system is designed for two-dimensional paper substrates and three-dimensional molded-fiber containers. Sun Chemical’s portfolio includes barrier and resistance coatings as well as optional heat-seal functionality.
The companies said the first approved coating, VAPORBLOC DFC HOTFOOD BARV656, has completed testing and validation and is commercially available.
According to the companies, Powerdrop can apply coatings at total coating weights well below 5%, supporting packaging structures designed around cellulose-based materials and established paper-recycling streams.
Application technology and barrier-coating chemistry are increasingly being developed together as converters seek fiber-based packaging structures with functional performance. Explore more PCI coverage of packaging coatings.
