Dual-Cure Coating Protects Wearable Electronics

Dymax has expanded its 9200-Series with two materials for protecting printed circuit boards used in consumer wearable devices.
The new 9208-W electronic coating combines UV/visible-light curing with a secondary moisture cure. The dual-cure approach is designed to allow material in areas shadowed from the curing light, including locations beneath PCB components and inside complex geometries, to continue curing.
Dymax said the coating creates a barrier against moisture, humidity, corrosion and thermal stress. It is designed to bond to flexible circuit boards and accommodate repeated bending associated with wearable-device use.
The coating also fluoresces blue to support inspection and quality-control processes.
Dymax simultaneously introduced 9209-W, a reworkable encapsulant for chips, wire bonds and other sensitive electronic components. The material is designed to allow components to be repaired or replaced after assembly errors or failed inspections.
Both materials are LED-curable at specified wavelengths and use secondary moisture cure for shadowed areas.
Performance and protection statements are based on manufacturer information.
The launch is relevant to readers following UV coatings because it combines rapid light curing with a secondary cure mechanism to address complex component geometry and electronic-protection requirements.
