Surmodics Adds Thin-Film Coating Technology in Acquisition
Surmodics Inc. has acquired Alta Biomed, a Carlsbad, California-based medical-device coating and testing business, adding proprietary thin-film surface-modification technology to its portfolio.
The acquisition adds Alta Biomed's PzF technology, which is designed to provide anti-thrombotic, anti-inflammatory and pro-healing surface characteristics, along with a West Coast testing operation supporting medical-device development.
Surmodics said the capabilities complement its existing surface-modification and in-vitro diagnostic technologies. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Although this is a specialized medical-device application, it is a coatings story at the functional end of the market, where thin films and engineered surfaces provide performance beyond traditional protection or appearance.
