Sherwin-Williams Report Points to Warmer, More Restorative Winter Interiors

Sherwin-Williams Consumer Brands Group is highlighting a shift toward warmer, more personal interiors in its Winter 2026 Decor Trend Report.
The company calls the direction Restorative Minimalism, describing an approach that moves away from bare, highly restrained interiors toward spaces incorporating natural materials, tactile surfaces, craftsmanship and visible imperfections.
Sherwin-Williams' Trendsight Team said economic and environmental conditions are influencing consumers to make more thoughtful changes to their homes. Rather than replacing furnishings or redesigning entire rooms, the report points toward maintaining existing items and making smaller updates that add comfort and character.
Color Sets the Foundation
Dutch Boy Paints' Essence palette represents the color side of the trend.
Dutch BoyThe palette combines Deep Rooted (311-7DB), the brand's earthy orange 2027 Color of the Year, with Antique White (011W) and Western Orange (209-4DB). The company recommends pairing the colors with natural wood and softer textiles to create interiors that feel settled rather than highly styled.
PCI previously covered Deep Rooted as Dutch Boy's 2027 Color of the Year, so the winter report provides a broader application context rather than another announcement of the color itself.
Decorative Finishes Refresh Existing Pieces
Krylon's portion of the report focuses on using decorative coatings to update existing furnishings.
KrylonNature-inspired colors include Matte Spanish Moss, Satin Brown Boots, Matte Coffee Bean and Satin Ivory. Desert Sand and Golden Glow add textured and metallic-looking accents.
Sherwin-Williams said these finishes can be used on everyday furnishings as well as seasonal decor, supporting the broader trend toward refreshing objects already in the home rather than replacing them.
Wood Grain Remains Visible
The report also incorporates Minwax Pickled Oak, the brand's 2027 Color of the Year.
MinwaxThe light stain is designed to retain visible grain and natural wood variation rather than covering the underlying substrate. Sherwin-Williams positions that appearance as part of the trend's focus on craftsmanship and durable natural materials.
PCI has separately covered the Minwax Color of the Year, making the broader trend connection the new element here.
Application Matters
Purdy contributes an application angle to the report.
PurdyThe company recommends matching brushes and roller nap to the coating and surface, preparing surfaces through sanding and patching, maintaining a wet edge and using consistent application pressure to create uniform texture and sheen.
Seasonal design trends influence architectural coating colors, sheen choices, decorative finishes and wood-finishing products. Restorative Minimalism also connects consumer design preferences with a broader interest in maintaining existing surfaces and furnishings rather than replacing them.
