ISO Publishes Updated Quality Management Standard

The International Organization for Standardization has published ISO 9001:2026, the sixth edition of its widely used quality management system standard.
The new edition replaces ISO 9001:2015 and retains the standard's existing management-system framework while introducing targeted changes intended to improve clarity and reflect current business conditions.
ISO said the revision places greater emphasis on leadership, quality culture and accountability. It also clarifies how organizations should address risks and opportunities and improves alignment with other ISO management system standards.
The standard also introduces a new Annex A designed to clarify terminology and the intent behind individual requirements.
ISO said more than one million organizations worldwide use ISO 9001. The standard applies across industries and organization sizes and is commonly used to structure quality systems around process control, customer requirements, continual improvement and documented management practices.
Organizations currently certified to ISO 9001:2015 will have a transition period extending through Sept. 30, 2029.
Accreditation bodies are expected to be ready to assess against ISO 9001:2026 by March 31, 2027. From March 31, 2028, new and initial accredited certifications may only be issued to the 2026 edition. Existing certified organizations can complete their transition during surveillance or recertification audits or through a separate transition audit.
The revision does not represent a complete restructuring of ISO 9001. ISO describes it as an evolution of the existing framework, with changes focused on usability, clearer expectations and the role of quality management in a changing operating environment.
For coatings manufacturers, the transition period provides time to compare existing quality-management procedures against the revised requirements and coordinate changes with certification bodies.
Quality systems affect raw-material control, batch consistency, production procedures, corrective actions and customer requirements across coatings manufacturers. Companies certified to ISO 9001 now have a defined timeline for reviewing and transitioning their quality management systems.
