Pre-Dispersed Graphene Additive Targets Coating Formulators

Graphene Integrations has introduced a pre-dispersed graphene additive designed for paint and coating formulators.
The Graphene Paint Additive is supplied with the graphene already dispersed in a carrier matched to the customer's formulation, including solvent, water or resin systems. Formulators can add the dispersion to an existing coating and mix it until uniform rather than handling graphene as a dry powder.
The company is positioning the additive for architectural paints, protective and industrial coatings, primers and sealers.
Graphene's thin, plate-like structure has made it a material of interest for barrier coatings because it can create a more tortuous path for moisture and gases through a film. Graphene Integrations does not assign universal corrosion or durability improvements to the additive. Instead, the company says performance should be evaluated within each customer's formulation against its existing control.
Typical dosage ranges from 1% to 7% by weight, depending on the application. Formulators can run their normal adhesion, appearance and exposure testing after incorporation.
The additive is available in 32-fluid-ounce bottles, 1-gallon jugs and 5-gallon pails, with bulk quantities available on request. The product is patent pending, made in the United States and contains no carbon black. Graphene Integrations says it does not sell the graphene in dry-powder form.
The launch is separate from recent PCI coverage of graphene corrosion testing involving Sparc Technologies and HydroGraph. That work focused on performance testing of another graphene technology rather than this newly commercialized formulation aid.

Dispersion remains one of the practical barriers to incorporating graphene into coatings. Supplying the material in a formulation-compatible carrier gives R&D teams another route for evaluating paint and coatings additives without adding a dry nanomaterial handling step.
