Nippon Paint AI Project Targets Knowledge in R&D Records

Nippon Paint Corporate Solutions and the University of Tokyo will develop AI technologies intended to make accumulated materials-development knowledge more usable.
The project was selected for the Japan Science and Technology Agency’s AI to Redesign Scientific Exploration, or ARiSE, program.
Researchers aim to extract knowledge and the reasoning behind technical decisions from Nippon Paint’s technical documents and R&D data. These resources will support an AI platform and agent technologies grounded in the physical behavior of materials.
The university’s Graduate School of Engineering and Graduate School of Frontier Sciences are participating. The partners will evaluate the resulting platform’s applicability and effectiveness in industrial materials development.
The announcement describes a research project, not a commercially available formulation system or demonstrated productivity improvement.
The project addresses how formulation knowledge can inform future development. Explore PCI’s materials coverage.
