Toyochem Achieves Food Packaging Coatings Certification

Toyochem Specialty Chemical Sdn. Bhd., a member of Japan's artience Group, has achieved Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification for its manufacturing processes for waterborne food packaging coatings.
The company announced the certification October 29, 2026.
The achievement complements its Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification, renewed by TÜV NORD CERT GmbH in August 2026.
Both certifications apply to the company's Category I: Production of Packaging Material operations and support manufacturing controls for its portfolio of waterborne barrier coatings.
Strengthening Food Packaging Quality Controls
HACCP provides a systematic approach to identifying, assessing and controlling hazards in food-related manufacturing processes.
Toyochem said the certification strengthens its existing quality management program by adding a preventive, process-oriented approach to food safety.
GMP certification supports manufacturing hygiene and operational controls, while HACCP focuses on identifying potential hazards and establishing measures to address them.
Together, the certifications are intended to provide customers with additional assurance about the company's coating manufacturing processes.
The announcement concerns production controls and quality systems. It should not be interpreted as independent confirmation that every coating formulation is approved for every possible food-contact application.
Waterborne Barrier Coatings
Toyochem's certified portfolio includes three waterborne coating series designed for paper and board packaging.
- FC Series: Provides resistance to oil and water for applications including lunch boxes, burger wraps and paper cups. Selected grades also support heat-sealing.
- VTR Series: Provides water-vapor barrier performance intended to help protect packaged contents, including products supplied in paper pouches.
- HSL Series: Functions as a primer for food packaging applications, helping improve lay-flat characteristics and reduce leakage around creases and folds.
Toyochem positions these technologies as alternatives to conventional polyethylene lamination and extrusion for selected packaging applications.
The company said the certifications support its efforts to expand in the global food packaging market as manufacturers and brand owners seek coating technologies that combine functional barrier properties with quality and food safety controls.
Supporting Packaging Manufacturers
"Achieving HACCP certification directly addresses our customers' evolving demands for uncompromising material safety," said Robin Loke, technical director at Toyochem Specialty Chemical.
"Every department played a part in this achievement, and our entire team is incredibly proud of this milestone. We will continue to elevate our standards to help customers seamlessly meet their food safety and compliance requirements."
Toyochem Specialty Chemical operates in Malaysia and supplies coatings, printing inks and other functional materials to packaging and industrial markets.
The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of artience Group, which develops specialty materials, inks, coatings and related technologies for international markets.
