CLEVELAND – Sherwin-Williams has been awarded the contract to supply marine coatings as part of a three-year overhaul of the super carrier U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt.

 

The project began in August and will continue through late 2012 at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, Newport News, VA, where the vessel was constructed and launched in October 1984. The 1,092-foot-long carrier has seen duty in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.

 

The coatings contract was awarded by Mid-Atlantic Coatings, Chesapeake, VA. Sherwin-Williams will provide just-in-time coatings as work progresses for the exterior topside, underwater hull and freeboard. Tank coatings include potable water, ballast, feedwater, reserve feedwater and damage-control voids.

 

Over 20 Sherwin-Williams military-approved coatings products will be used in the coatings project. Many of these were chosen for the innovative solutions they provide, such as rapid-cure single-coat protection, optically active pigment tank linings and low VOCs.

 

Sherwin-Williams will also provide technical expertise and work closely with both the shipyard and contractor throughout the project.
