Brenntag Specialties, Inc., a specialty ingredients distributor to the Adhesives, Coatings, Elastomers and Sealants (ACES) industries, has announced the dedication of a new “ACES” Applications Laboratory in North Wales, PA. Joe Mulvey, Technical Development Director, will oversee this new facility. The addition of Mr. Yanmin Zhong, Ph.D., ACES Technical Specialist, provides over 20 years of ACES formulation experience. Zhong brings with him exceptional skills and knowledge in polymer synthesis and starting formulations.
This new, fully equipped applications laboratory will focus on starting-point formulations to provide customers an opportunity to commercialize their product offerings with minimal technical investment on their part. Polymer development will also be accomplished to provide new options to the industry including green resin systems with outstanding properties.
“Our goal is to assist customers in bringing new products to market faster, in response to rapidly changing environmental and consumer needs, and to promote unique, new products from our specialty suppliers. Key among new products are true green resins – resins that are renewable in short time spans and therefore sustainable. Examples are resins derived from plant-based raw materials, such as rosin esters for coatings and plant-based curing agents for waterborne coatings, grouts and high-performance industrial and automotive coatings. We are also expanding our waterborne, UV-cure, and very-high-solids product offerings to help minimize or eliminate solvent emissions. We are performing short- and long-term research and development on traditional resins such as polyesters, acrylates and epoxies derived from non-traditional green raw materials for coating, adhesive, ink and elastomer products,” commented Mulvey.
Among the services provided to customers are testing for thickness, hardness, chemical resistance, viscosity, dispersion, color, drying, UV and bake curing, gloss, adhesion, and various physical strength tests. Condensation and addition polymerization are also available.
